Building Pad Volume Calculator
Excavation volume for a rectangular pad or foundation dig — with over-dig allowance, side slopes and topsoil stripping kept on separate lines.
The hole is always bigger than the building
Two allowances make it so. Over-dig gives you room to set and strip forms — usually about two feet a side, which on a 40 by 60 pad is already 400 extra square feet of floor. Side slopes then open the hole further with every foot of depth: at 1:1, a 6-foot dig adds six feet on each side at the surface.
Put those together on a modest foundation and the dirt you actually move is commonly 60-100% more than the box under the building. Estimating off the pad dimensions alone is how a foundation dig runs over before the first truck leaves.
Keep topsoil on its own line
Strip depth is small — four to eight inches — but it covers a large area, so it adds up fast, and it usually behaves differently from the rest of the dig. Topsoil is normally stockpiled and reused for final grading rather than hauled off, which means it should be priced as its own operation. That is why it sits on a separate line here rather than being folded into the excavation number.

The loose figure is what leaves site — take it to the truck load calculator for trip counts, or run the whole job through the excavation cost calculator to get a cost per yard you can actually bid from.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate building pad excavation volume?
Take the pad footprint, add the over-dig you need for forms and working room on every side, multiply by depth. If the walls are sloped for safety the hole is a frustum, not a box, so the volume sits between the bottom area and the larger top area. This calculator handles both.
How much over-dig should I allow?
Two feet per side is a common working allowance for footings and foundation walls — enough to set forms, strip them and get a person in there. On a 40 by 60 pad that seemingly small allowance adds about 400 square feet of dig, so it is worth putting in the number rather than absorbing it.
Does topsoil stripping count as part of the excavation?
It is usually measured and priced separately, because topsoil often gets stockpiled and reused rather than hauled off. This calculator keeps the strip volume on its own line so you can price it as its own operation or leave it on site.
Why is my hole bigger than the pad?
Over-dig plus side slopes. A 6-foot-deep hole sloped at 1:1 opens six extra feet on every side at the surface — so a 40 by 60 pad becomes a 56 by 76 hole at grade. On sloped excavations the dirt you move is often nearly double the box under the building.
