Vertical walls versus sloped walls
A vertical trench is the simple case: width × depth × length. Slope the walls back for safety and the section becomes a trapezoid — the top is wider than the bottom by twice the slope ratio times the depth. At 1.5:1 in Type C soil, a 3-foot-wide, 6-foot-deep trench opens to 21 feet across at the surface and moves nearly four times the dirt of the shored version.
That gap is why trench boxes exist. It is also why "just slope it" is rarely the cheap option once you are past a few feet of depth and hauling the spoil away.
Where the leftover dirt comes from
Backfill a trench with the same soil you took out and you still end up with a pile. Two things cause it. The pipe and its bedding stone now occupy volume the soil used to fill, and the excavated material has swelled 10-30% coming out of the ground. Together they guarantee surplus on almost every trench.

On safety
The slope options here are the standard OSHA ratios by soil type, but this is a geometry tool. It does not classify soil, account for surcharge loads, spoil piles set too close to the edge, or water. Trenches over five feet need a protective system and a competent person on site — this calculator sizes the dirt, not the risk.

How do you calculate trench excavation volume?
For vertical walls it is width × depth × length. With sloped walls the trench is a trapezoid in section, so the volume is the average of the top and bottom widths × depth × length. This calculator takes your slope ratio and does the trapezoid for you.
What slope do I need for a safe trench?
OSHA requires protection for trenches deeper than 5 feet. Sloping ratios by soil type are 1.5:1 for Type C, 1:1 for Type B and 0.75:1 for Type A, measured horizontal to vertical. This calculator handles the geometry — it does not classify your soil or replace a competent person on site.
How much backfill will I have left over?
Backfill is the trench volume minus whatever stays in it: pipe, bedding and any imported material. What is left is your spoil, and it comes out of the ground swelled, so it looks like more than the hole it came from. This calculator shows both the neat number and the loose number you will actually be moving.
Why is there spoil left over when I backfill the same trench?
Two reasons stack up. The pipe and bedding stone occupy space the soil used to fill, and the excavated soil bulks up 10-30% when dug. Together they mean a trench almost always produces surplus material even though nothing new was added.
